Pine trees are one of the main economic crops of Dinh Lap – Lang Son and the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Pine wood is widely used for paper production and furniture, while pine resin is a valuable natural material with many applications after processing. It is used in electronics soldering, soap making, adhesives, paint, printing ink, rubber production, friction aid for string instruments like violins, and even in traditional medicine.
Pine trees can begin producing resin from the age of 15. Resin harvesting can continue for 10 to 15 years before the trees are finally used for timber. The best time for extracting is during the warm weather after Lunar New Year and the hot, humid summer months when the yield is highest. During the dry in Autumn and cold in Winter, local people pause extracting to protect the trees and extend their productive life.
Today, pine resin is valued at around 35,000–39,000 VND per kilogram. A family with about 500 trees can collect up to 400 kg of resin after just 10 days of work.
Although the work is not complicated, it requires good health and stamina. Every day, farmers walk through the mountains and forests, breathe in fresh air, and enjoy the beautiful natural scenery while staying active and strong.
